Sergeant Halstead leaned back in his worn leather chair, rubbing the stubble on his chin as he scanned the case summary. The gang murder had shaken the city, and his team was responsible for putting the pieces together. With Lincoln White, head of the Boston PD's Narcotics Unit, leading the hunt for the shooters, Halstead's team had been assigned the less glamorous but equally important task of uncovering the why and how behind the gruesome crime.
The office was quiet, the hum of fluorescent lights punctuating the occasional rustle of papers. Halstead hadn't seen Barnes and Cahill, two of his seasoned detectives, since shortly after the morning briefing ended. He wondered what they had dug up so far.
As if on cue, Mainelli, the senior-most detective in his squad, and also the group curmudgeon, sauntered past his office door in the direction of the breakroom. His heavy steps and labored breathing made it impossible not to notice him.
"Mainelli," Halstead called out, raising a hand to flag him down. âGot a minute?â
Mainelli turned, annoyance carved into his face, though it was now tempered with that âWhat did I do now?â expression common among those called on by their supervisors.
Halstead waited patiently as Mainelli took his sweet time lumbering back to his office. The heavyset detective leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "You rang?"
"Any word from Barnes or Cahill?" Halstead set down the supplemental report written by one of the first patrol units on scene. He took an extra moment to line the file on top of its folder.
âNot yet.â
âAny idea where they went? I haven't seen them since this morning." Halstead didnât show his annoyance. Heâd dealt with suspects who required less effort. Mainelli was a good cop, but he was old school and would never volunteer anything to a supervisor. He had risen in the ranks during a time when there had been a division between those on the beat and those in the leather seat, and was conditioned to distrust any question, especially ones about his fellow cops.
âThink they were runninâ down a lead.â Mainelli looked over his shoulder to see if anyone was eavesdropping.
Halstead almost chuckled at the unwarranted paranoia on display.
"Lead?" Halstead asked, his interest piqued.
"Didnât say much." Mainelli shrugged. "I think Cahill's got some old connections. Probably hitting up some of his old snitches from his days as a narc. Who knows, maybe heâll shake something loose."
Halstead nodded, his eyes narrowing in thought. "All right, keep me posted if you hear anything from them."
"Will do, Sarge,â Mainelli grunted as he pushed away from the doorframe.
Halstead let out a controlled sigh, careful not to betray his worry that Barnes and Cahill werenât stepping on the toes of White and his unit. There was no telling how the hot-headed lieutenant might react if that happened.
Halstead shifted gears. "You make any headway on the evidence from the scene?"
Mainelli nodded. "I was on my way to Charles to check the status."
"Youâre heading the wrong way, unless Charlesâs office has been moved to the breakroom.
